I went to my first appointment and answered a bunch of questions and got the obligatory pap smear. Yuck! Anyway, I could not believe they asked such questions as, "If it is a boy do you want to have him circumcised?" and "Do you plan to breastfeed?" Wow, I am still trying to digest that fact that I am pregnant or so we think anyway.
Since, I was clueless as to the date of my last period, the Dr sent me away with a long list of blood tests that I had to take and an ultrasound. However, she also informed me since I did not have any symptoms, there was a possibility that I may not have a viable pregnancy. How nice... Good thing I still had not gotten used to the idea yet.
So, I scheduled the Ultrasound for about a week away so my husband could be there and went home. More waiting...
The day of the ultrasound, I felt a little anxious. What if there was nothing there? What then? But I tried to calm myself and see what happened.
We went in the room and the lady prepped me for the ultrasound. She put that gel on my belly and started probing around with the wand. The room was very quiet and she didn't say anything. Me and my husband are straining at the screen trying to see something even though we do not know what we are looking for. It seemed like hours of silence as the tech kept probing and I am starting to get a little nervous. I ask, "Is everything okay?" and she says "Yes, just looking for a heartbeat." I'm thinking great... Then she says, "Oh here it is" and we hear this fast little beat and something flashing on the screen. She tells us that the flashing is the heartbeat. I look at my husband and we both say..."Wow". Then she has to call in a more experienced technician to do the measurements to determine its age. It takes some more probing and more silence and more punching things into the computer but at last she says..."Looks like 6 weeks the due date should be October 19
th". I look at my husband and say, "Is that proof enough?" He just grins and says.."It looks like a little bean". "How eloquent honey", I think.
Later that week, I go and have 7 yes I said 7 vials of blood taken. Now, I hate needles and the last time I went they could only get 1 vial so I was very nervous. I made sure I drank plenty of water and prayed that I wouldn't scream and run at the sight of the syringe. I did relatively well and was only in pain for the next 2 days. I think it is
psychosomatic or something but I swear I can still feel the needle prick like a week later. Anyway, in the back of my mind I am thinking, if I can't handle a
needle prick which they describe as a little pinch...how can I survive childbirth. All I can say is that this is going to be an interesting journey indeed.
